One of the stranger parts of our kindergarten search has been taking our 4 year old for interviews at private schools. These lovely schools really do their best to make it low-key and fun (they are always called playdates rather than interviews in front of the children) but it's hard to take away the weirdness of having total strangers interact with your child, especially your shy child, and not feel insanely frustrated when you watch her clam up and want to scream that they aren't getting to know the real her at all.
This week, Josh and I tagged along behind Ella as she toured a school with the Kindergarten teacher before the interview. This teacher clearly has a remarkable rapport with children and quickly coaxed out Ella's exuberant side when she let her feed the kindergarten class rat Cuddly (really).
As we went into the library, I overheard this conversation:
Ella: Do you have any of my favorite books?
Kindergarten teacher: What are your favorite books?
Ella: The Henry and Mudge books.
Kindergarten teacher: Do you know who the author is?
Ella: [without missing a beat] Cynthia Rylant
Now THAT is the real Ella. My girl knows her books. I think she rocked that interview, don't you?
