My new favorite sentences

Dash's sentences are almost all too cute to stand these days, but he has a few that are especially cute.

He instructs us to put our "Arms up!"  Then he says "Hap birt-day do you!" We still don't understand why our arms have to be up for the birthday song to be sung but it's adorable.

"No I want face wo-tion!"  This actually means "No!  I do not want face lotion!" but he never remembers the 'not' making it very confusing but very adorable to try to understand what he does, and does not, want you to do.

"No baby sage" which means he does not want a baby massage after his bath.  Except that he does want a baby massage (i.e. to get rubbed down with lotion so his poor sensitive skin isn't so red and itchy) and as you put on the lotion, he squeals and grins and says "Feels good!"

"Dashy do it!"  His second birthday is in less than two weeks.  He is very very ready to be two.

And my new favorite: "Thank you Mommy Dinner!"  He says this almost without fail at every meal whether he likes what is on his plate or not.  Nice table manners in a one-year old are mighty endearing.

Day 24 of gratitude

Today I am grateful to have spent the morning enjoying some one-on-one time with my girl.  Her best friend invited us out to breakfast, and we decided to walk the two miles to the restaurant.  It was a gorgeous, crisp morning and we had such a lovely walk and breakfast together.  I love having both of my babies in my lap, but it's also awfully special to get to spend some time alone with one of them every now and then.

Day 21 of gratitude

Today I am grateful for Amazon Prime.  Seriously.  I know that it's a good thing to patronize small businesses, and I really do try to do that when I can.  But to be realistic about it, I have about 4 minutes each day in which to procure diapers/new chapter books for my bookworm daughter/dishwasher soap/birthday party favors for my soon-to-be two-year old/running socks/everything else.  And Amazon has it all, sent to my house quickly and for free.  For a busy mom, well, it's something to be very grateful for.

Day 22 of gratitude

THANKGIVING DAY!  It's hard not to feel overwhelmed with gratitude when I sit down to a bountiful meal with my wonderful family.  I'm thankful we got to Skype with Aunt Leah up in Alaska and I'm thankful to have spent the day with three generations of my family cooking a big meal and spending time outside.  Pretty darn perfect.

Day 23 of Gratitude

Today I am grateful for good neighbors.  I spent some time outside in the front yard raking leaves today and got to catch up with 3 families on my block, all out enjoying the beautiful weather, too.

Gratitude, Days 19 and 20

I just got back from a two-day business trip and I found myself seeing things to be grateful for left and right.

Day 19:  Driving into Oak Ridge (the site of my meetings and also my hometown in east Tennessee), I was in awe of the beauty of the Smoky Mountains in the late afternoon, fall hazy sunshine.  On this day, I felt so grateful to have grown up in such a beautiful valley and to have the mountains feel like a homecoming every time I return to them.

Day 20:  Returning home from my meetings today, the airport was just a complete zoo.  It was hard to navigate around all the crowds as I got off my plane and I was tired and hungry and just ready to be back in my own house.  But my grumpiness about all the slow-moving travelers dissipated as soon as I came out of security area into the lobby and saw the huge numbers of happy families gathered together and excitedly anticipating the arrivals of their loved ones for the holidays.  Seeing all those smiling faces (of strangers!), I just felt so grateful for the joy of family and being together at the holidays.   And then I pulled into my driveway at 7:50 pm, fully expecting my kids to be tucked into bed, but instead I was greeted with fleece-jammy-wearing-faces-against-the-window-calls-of-Mama's Home!!! happiness.  And once I got in the door and past the hug barrage, I was greeted with a hot bowl of soup and a toasty cheese sandwich that my hubby had waiting for me.  So today, I am so grateful for a joyous homecoming.

Days of Gratitude 16-17-18, just late

Day 16 of gratitude: Today I am grateful for a little boy whose greatest desire is to cuddle his mommy.  Nothing better in this world than rocking in a chair with my sweet, soft baby boy nestled into my shoulder.  He now demands a 'cuddle mommy' component to his wake up and good night routines, and even though it's sometimes inconvenient, I know these days are fleeting, so we sit and we rock and we giggle and we cuddle.  I am so so grateful for baby cuddles.

Day 17 of gratitude:  Today I am grateful to live in an amazing food town.  On Saturday morning, we picked up local eggs, kale (everyone in my family is addicted to kale chips - vegetable miracles do happen, people), and broccoli (the kids' other favorite vegetable).  I ran to the Whole Foods a mile from my house a few hours later to pick up some fish to make for the kids for dinner (they love salmon.  Now don't I sound like that horrible gloating mom we all hate?  Don't hate me. At a party later this weekend, my kids ate only the following beige foods:  hummus, pita, bread, bagel chips, and oh, yes, not beige, but not healthy either: cupcakes.  We win some, we lose some on the food front.  I'm trying not to sweat it).  And for dinner that night, before we went to the movies, Josh and I had burgers - delicious homemade bun - amazing pimento cheese on top - salty and browned on the flat-top - pure deliciousness - at a restaurant near Duke that has apparently been serving maybe the best burger I've ever had for as long as I've lived here and somehow I'd never been there.  Every day, the food choices in my town excite me and that is definitely something to be grateful for.

Day 18 of gratitude: Today I am grateful for friends who encourage me to be healthy.  I am grateful to my friend S who gets up in the cold and dark to run with me during the week.  And I am grateful for my friend (other) S who invited me to start doing Pilates lessons with her.  A year later, I'm totally hooked and I look forward to our weekly workout with our amazing instructor.  And my core is so much stronger now!  You just can't quite see my six-pack because, well, see day 17.
