I always look forward to going to buy Christmas trees. We have a tall living room so I can pick out a giant tree and it won't ever be too big. And we've started getting a tiny tree for the kids to decorate themselves in our upstairs library nook. I just love having a Christmas tree with the woodsy smell and beautiful twinkly lights.
Most years, we go on a sunny weekend morning in early December to pick out our trees at a local tree lot and spend the rest of that day decorating them. This year, however, our tree shopping plans were already going to be shortened since the window we had to get the trees came down to last Sunday morning between my 8 am Pilates lesson and a noon flight I had. That already tight window disappeared completely when we discovered that our refrigerator had broken and we needed to spend the morning ferrying what we could salvage to our friends' freezers and tossing the rest of the fridge contents. Way less fun than Christmas tree shopping.
With a ridiculously busy week, we weren't quite sure when we'd get our tree but we managed to eat dinner by 6 pm on Tuesday night (without a working fridge, we've had a lot more take-out this week which at least means no dishes) so we headed out to pick out our trees. I hadn't realized that a major bonus of going in the evening was that the many holidays lights hung around the tree lot were especially pretty so the whole event actually felt more magical. We picked out our 9-foot tree (hooray!), a little tree for the kids, and Ella convinced me that we also needed a wreath for the door. We came home happy with our holiday adventure, and maybe, just maybe, we'll get everything decorated before this weekend's holiday visitors arrive.
Ella's snow bunny boots are especially funny since it was
at least 55 degrees that night with no chance of snow at all.
